OUR HURRICANE IRENE PREPARATIONS

For All Students, Faculty and Staff:

  1. Classes and Events: No classes or events will be held on campus this weekend, Saturday, Aug. 27th or Sunday, Aug. 28th.
  2. Updates: Monitor this website, the College e-mail system and the MIR3 Emergency Notification System for updates on the resumption of normal College operations.
  3. Travel: Do not attempt to travel to or from campus during the hurricane.
  4. Campus Computers: The College’s computer network will be completely shut down late Saturday afternoon. All computers and printers connected to the network should be shut down and turned off. When the hurricane has passed, the computer network will be brought back online.
  5. Windows: All furnishings, possessions, etc. should be moved away from windows, and offices and rooms secured. Blinds should be expanded and closed.
  6. Medical Supplies: Emergency medical stations are available around the campus, and maps of their locations will be distributed and posted.
  7. Medical Emergencies: Anyone with a medical emergency residing on campus this weekend should notify the Office of Public Safety at 631-656-2196 or PublicSafety@ftc.edu.

For Residence Hall Students:

  1. Leave or Stay? Residence Hall students who have a safe home or place to go for the weekend are advised to leave campus. Items in rooms near windows should be moved. Rooms must be secured, and the Residence Hall Director and staff MUST be notified if a student is leaving campus and where that student will be staying.
  2. Students Remaining on Campus: Residence Hall students who cannot leave campus must notify their RA and RD, as well as the Resident Hall Director.
  3. Meals: Food Service staff will be on campus over the weekend and are prepared to provide regular meal service as long as there are no power outages and access to the Upbeat Café is possible. In the event of power outages, emergency foods and beverages will be available for those on campus.
  4. Emergency Meal Boxes: In addition, students will be given emergency meal boxes for Sunday as a precaution.
  5. Students on Medications: Students taking medications and remaining on campus must ensure that they have a sufficient supply for at least 3-5 days. They must also have instructions available on the usage of those medications.
  6. Emergency Contacts: Students must ensure that the Residence Hall Director has the name and number of an emergency contact person.
  7. Television Stations: The satellite dishes that provide television access to the Residence Halls are being removed from the roofs of the Residence Halls by Saturday. There will be no television access, therefore, for most of the weekend and Monday.
  8. Power Outages: In the event of power outages, flashlights and other emergency equipment are available in each Residence Hall. The College has an emergency generator that can be used to provide some electrical services to a resident hall.
  9. If Residence Hall Evacuation Necessary:  In the event that one or more of the Residence Halls have to be evacuated, plans are prepared to have mattresses and supplies in the Gymnasium. Because the Residence Halls are relatively new and constructed to withstand strong hurricane winds, such an evacuation is considered highly unlikely.
  10. Public Safety: Public Safety officers will be on duty the entire weekend and even sleeping on campus.
  11. Maintenance: Maintenance personnel will also be available the entire weekend, particularly on Sunday when the hurricane arrives.

For Students Living Off-Campus:

  1. Safety: The College strongly urges you to take the warnings about the serious nature of this hurricane seriously. Seek one of the shelters in Suffolk or Nassau County ASAP. If you choose to remain in your apartment or building, ensure an adequate supply of food, beverages, and other necessities for an emergency.
  2. Windows: Move all items away from windows. Cover windows with blinds, curtains, cardboard, or materials to prevent flying glass.
  3. Notifications: Make sure that at least one person not living with you knows your whereabouts and can reach you if the need arises.
  4. Cars: Make sure that you fill your gas tank.
  5. Bathtubs and Sinks: Fill them with water for flushing toilets or for cleaning purposes.
  6. Refrigerators and Freezers: Set the temperature to the lowest settings and use as infrequently as possible during power outages.
  7. Candles and Open Flames: Do not use either as a light source or as a heat source.
