2018 Luminaries Film Festival @ Five Towns College & a Tribute to Sol Negrin
Friday May 11th was no ordinary evening in the FTC Performing Arts Center. To the contrary, it was an event we have waited all year long for . . . it was the 2018 Luminaries Film Festival, the culminating academic showcase for the Film/Video Division!!
Added to the line-up was not only the red carpet and some special guests, including Jake & Jake as M. C.s, but also the Mass Communication Division live broadcast through live streaming on YouTube and Facebook. And, so, the FTC PAC was packed with energy, vibrancy, and the thrill that comes with hard work and accomplishment.
The Luminaries followed two days of student screenings and much fanfare as the students and faculty alike enjoyed with awe the final productions after partaking in screenwriting, practice/rehearsals, editing, producing, and, of course, much trial and error. Ultimately, the final films received critical acclaim and well-deserved praise.
This year was also dedicated to the founding father of the FTC Film/Video Division, esteemed Professor and Cinematographer, Sol Negrin A.S.C. The awards were renamed “The Solies,” and the “Best of Fest” was renamed “The Sol Negrin Award.” The College was privileged to have both Michael Negrin, Sol’s son and an accomplished Cinematographer in his own right, and Sol’s widow, Betty Negrin, in attendance that evening. There were also many alumni fortunate to have been taught and mentored by Sol Negrin through the years present as the College paid tribute to this fine and accomplished man who passed away last year; yet, left a lasting legacy on our campus. Also, this year had sponsors: Final Draft and B&H Photo.
Overall, the three day event was a true celebration of our students’ films projected on a 4K projector in the Performing Arts Center, and honoring the legacy of Sol Negrin, A.S. C.at Five Towns College.
The College wishes to acknowledge the efforts of Chair James Bock and the entire Film/Video Division faculty, Chair Thomas Calandrillo and the Mass Communication Division participants, the Audio Recording Technology faculty and our sponsors:
