Summer 2021 High School Scholars Succeed at FTC!
This summer, Five Towns College launched a major initiative. Typically, In the past, high school students enrolled in a myriad of specialized courses and were exposed to college life and academics here. To help the neighboring community and high school students who endured a difficult year during the pandemic, the institution offered a full summer scholarship to accepted students who applied by June 1st to participate in one or two classes and, simultaneously, earn three to six college credits.
As a result, many local high school students from all over Long Island transcended onto campus and became our “Summer High School Scholars.” The six-week program offered courses in Audio Recording Technology, Filmmaking, Computer Graphics, Mass Communication, Theatre and Music. These students took away valuable skills and insights in each specialized field. While learning and having fun, the Summer High School Scholars were eligible to earn college credits that can be used towards their future degrees. They were able to get an insider’s look into what college life is really like and get to know college students, too.
On August 12th, The Sights and Sounds of Summer, a culminating event, was held. It was a terrific day of music and theatrical performances, art displays, digital photography exhibits, audio creations, and film screenings that showcased the creative work made in the summer program. The students were excited to share their work with an audience!
The Upbeat was alive with a delicious luncheon, poetry readings and a jazz performance which was enjoyed by all participants, their parents, and friends. The College thanks all the faculty, staff and students who participated in our Summer High School Scholars program and helped to bring things back to normal and make it a success!
As this was a new program, the outcomes were positive, and the institution will be offering full scholarships again to individuals who are accepted into it. The Summer High School Scholars 2022 will launch sometime in September so be sure to check back and apply or recommend to high school students to do so. We look forward to enriching young students’ lives with creativity. There will be a cap on enrollment so don’t miss out!
