Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Production Design

Overview

New for Fall 2026, the B.F.A. in Production Design at Five Towns College is a hands-on program focused on real-world production experience. Students learn to bring ideas to life across stage, film, live events, and media through a production-driven approach that integrates design, construction, and collaboration.

Program Approach

Students work through the full production process, translating ideas into physical and visual form through design, construction, and technical execution. In a production-focused environment, they gain experience with industry tools and workflows while collaborating across disciplines to build practical and leadership skills.

1. Develop Conceptual, Analytical, and Technically Fluent Storytellers

Enable students to analyze scripts, narratives, and production contexts; generate original concepts; and articulate storytelling intent through visual, spatial, and technical design decisions, while building foundational and applied proficiency in scenic, lighting, sound, projections, and emerging media. Emphasis is placed on technical literacy, safe practices, and the integrated use of multiple production systems to support effective storytelling.

2. Translate Ideas into Realized Production through Collaboration and Leadership

Prepare students to move designs from concept to execution through industry-standard processes, drafting and documentation, and hands-on production practice. The program further develops students’ ability to communicate ideas clearly, collaborate effectively within production teams, and manage resources and timelines with professionalism, integrity, and accountability.

3. Prepare Adaptable Professionals for a Changing Industry

Equip graduates with the critical thinking, flexibility, and ethical grounding necessary to respond to evolving technologies, production models, and professional environments across contemporary entertainment fields.

Program Structure: Two Concentrations

The Production Design program is built around the full arc of production—from concept to realization—training students to be both storytellers and technicians who can work fluidly across stage, screen, and live media.

Students choose from two complementary concentrations:

Immersive Storytelling focuses on conceptual development, story interpretation, and shaping immersive narrative worlds across stage, screen, and live media.

Entertainment Technology focuses on the realization of creative vision through the execution and integration of technical systems.

Together, these concentrations reflect two sides of the same process: one defines the creative vision, while the other brings it to life through technical execution. In the Senior Project, students collaborate to fully realize a production from concept through execution.
