FTC students gather for a fun and enlightening game show

By Sean Lanigan, ’22

On Tuesday night, November 30th, the Downbeat Cafe at Five Towns College was the place to be for the first annual THE CALORIES ARE RIGHT event.  Modeled after the iconic television show, THE PRICE IS RIGHT, and instead of guessing the prices of random items, students tried to guess the calories of popular foods.  The winner would receive a $40 gift card to DoorDash.  Playing the role of show host Drew Carey was RA Paul Chahfe, a Junior Theatre Major at Five Towns College, who wanted to create a gathering based on the famous show.

“I was always a big fan of game shows, and to me, THE PRICE IS RIGHT was always a very interesting concept, and guessing calories in food to me seemed to be an incredibly creative idea,” said Chahfe.

Students guessed the calories in foods such as a pizza pie from Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza (1,536 cal.), a donut from Dunkin (270 cal.), and orders of McDonald’s small (229 cal.), medium (378 cal.), and large fries (498 cal.).  Whoever’s guess was the closest in terms of calories would be awarded the points.  It absolutely felt like being a game show contestant because as students were writing down their answers, in the background played the iconic music from another hit game show, JEOPARDY.

Winning the first-ever THE CALORIES ARE RIGHT contest and DoorDash gift card was Jordan Kudler, a Senior Business Major at Five Towns College, who was happy to make history.

“I had an excellent time tonight, and I am absolutely thrilled to win this first-ever contest, and for the future students here, hopefully, it becomes a yearly event,” said Kudler.

Chahfe agreed, saying, “I would love to see this event come back.”

Will this event return?  You will have to come on down to find out!
