Student Complaints for Distance Education under the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA)
- The institution’s internal complaint procedures generally require that a a current student should begin the student complaint process by completing and submitting a Five Towns College Student Complaint Form. This form is available online and can be submitted directly to the Dean of Students Office and/or their designee in person in Room 108B or can be emailed to dos@ftc.edu. The Student Complaint Form is here. The Student Complaint Form will be processed, and the student will be contacted. A College Administrator, the Dean of Students Office or other appropriate designee will respond fairly and within a reasonable time period. Students who require advice on how to pursue a complaint can contact their Academic Advisor, the Assistant Dean for Campus Life, or the Dean of Students Office.
- As a member of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), the SARA impacts out-of-state students with respect to consumer protection complaints resulting specifically from distance education courses, activities, and operations provided by SARA-participating institutions to students in other SARA states. To the extent that instances arise that require institutions’ home states, through their SARA State Portal Entities, to investigate and resolve allegations of dishonest or fraudulent activity by the state’s SARA-participating institutions, including the provision of false or misleading information, students should submit to the SARA State Portal Entity in NYS which is responsible for conducting the investigation and resolution of complaints that are not resolved at the institutional level.
- SARA policies do not cover complaints related to grades or student conduct violations.
- Additionally, a student may appeal the institution’s decision from its internal Student Complaint process to the SARA State Portal Entity in New York State within two years of the incident about which the complaint is made.
- Should an out-of-state student want to file a Student Complaint, they should begin the process by going to the NC-SARA complaint process available here.
- The New York State Education Department’s SARA complaint procedure is available here.
