  • Digital Music Production
  • This course will provide hands-on activities for the student at the beginner and intermediate level, interested in audio recording production. Students will do actual sound recording in the College’s industry standard audio recording studios using Pro Tools. Principles of recording and mixing music as a group and individually will be the primary focus of this workshop. Students will receive an introduction to microphone principles, audio recording techniques as well as some ADR sessions to replace dialog, building of sound FX, creating Foley effects, as well as creating music to enhance a movie scene.

Recording Studio Operations

This course provides an in-depth study of studio procedures, production techniques and digital signal processing. Application of recording skills including session setup and tempo mapping in software. & nbsp; Music production using acoustic instrument and micing techniques. Mixing techniques involving advanced signal flow.

Live Concert Production

Gain real world experience working as part of a live sound and broadcast production team at the Great South Bay Music Festival.  This intense three-week hands-on course focuses on the technical aspects of LIVE concert production.  It is open to all Audio, Film, Theatre Tech and Mass Communication majors.  Students will be assigned a faculty advisor from one of the four specific areas;  Audio, Multi-camera Production, Journalism/Broadcast, or Stage Lighting.

Audio Recording Techniques

An overview of the recording studio with focused attention on the control room. Study and demonstration of techniques in recording, and production.  Practical application of studio procedures in actual recording & mixing situations.  Development of skills on recording consoles, digital recording formats, and special outboard recording equipment, including reverbs, and dynamic effects processors.

Advanced Mixing Procedures

A study of the art of music production mixing. Creating stereo mixdown using industry standard hardware and software. Advanced techniques of compressor/limiters, expanders/noise gates for dynamic sidechaining and parallel processing. Applicable use of equalization for musical timbre modifications. Practice time-base FX processing including reverb, delay, and modulation. Mixing analysis and frequency ear training.

Video for Audio Production

The study of video editing, including but not limited to the tools and modes used within the non-destructive editing realm. Special attention toward sound editing within industry standard software programs.  Synchronization of audio to video in post-production.  Introductory understanding of mixdown procedures for stereo and multi-channel productions.

Video Game Sound Production

Study of production techniques within the video game environment. Synchronization of audio and on-screen animation. Creating and insertion of sound effects, voice ADR, and the art Foley design. Final mixdown procedure for stereo and multi-channel sessions specifically in video game production

Audio Mastering

This course will prepare the student for a career in mastering of a professional audio production by using critical listening and audio sound modifying tools. It will cover the components of sound and the in-depth explanation of the methods to manipulate files. It will address the current industry level and the practices of bringing project to high fidelity and proper file format.

Professional Studios

Studio A, a professional audio recording and mixing facility, is replete with top-of-the-line equipment. Studio B is where beginner students learn multi-tracking techniques, plus signal flow and troubleshooting. And, Studio C, houses a stunning variety of outboard equipment from world-class manufacturers. It is in that studio where audio/video students can edit stereo and 5.1 multichannel soundtracks. In addition, the next studio, MIDI/Non-Linear Lab, offers individual workstations equipped with top-notch technology, such as KORG M3 Keyboards and powerful iMacs.  These call come pre-installed with the latest versions of revolutionary software. In addition, students can also use this space to sign out microphones and audio equipment for projects.

Real World Experience

One of the most important aspects of this concentration happens away from campus. Students are required to complete two 90-hour audio recording internships.  This allows you to explore the world of audio recording technology, moreover, builds confidence in your training and experience. This opportunity, to work alongside professionals, provides the groundwork for future employment as they learn to network and build essential relationships with some of the best business minds and entertainment organizations in the country, including SONYMTV, KORG, Universal Media Group and HBO.
