FTC Performing Arts Center is ‘lit’ with students interested in lighting design

The Performing Arts Center {PAC} was lit on October 2nd as Professor Laura Alberts previewed Five Towns College’s upcoming Lighting Club. Students of all majors were given hands-on opportunities to experience the art and technique of stage lighting.
Olivia Collado, an FTC Mass Comm major with a concentration in Live Entertainment Media Production, is working hard to get this club off the ground, saying, “We’re giving people a little introduction to lighting, lighting events, and lighting theater shows.” Collado added that working actual live events is a great way to learn, and Five Towns offers plenty of year-round productions and events in the PAC.
The introductory meeting not only provided a glimpse into light fixtures and consoles but also presented a guest speaker. Jon Schwille from the lighting company, Elation, provided students with an understanding of his own experience in creating lighting and boards. Students were impressed with Schwille’s background as well as some new additions inside the PAC.

“It was a cool opportunity to see a lot of high-quality and newer lighting fixtures that we often don’t have access to because not everywhere replaces their lighting fixtures every time something new is released,”
said Mass Comm major Sam Clopper.
Alberts, who will guide the club, invites all students who are curious about lighting to get involved and join the club. “Ultimately, the goal is to have all of the students be more hands-on and involved with performances, musicals, and plays, so that they can then assist with the lighting or design themselves,” said Alberts.
