Undergraduate Portfolio Submission
Film and Television (B.F.A)
Note: Applicants for the Spring and Fall 2023, are not required to submit portfolios at this time.
The Film and Television Division leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree is designed to provide students with hands on experience in producing, directing, screenwriting, cinematography, and editing for professional careers in independent and commercial filmmaking production.
Prospective students may submit their portfolios one of four ways: Video Sample, Writing Story, Creative Essay, or Photo Story. In some cases, an interview may be requested and can last up to 30 minutes.
Prospective students’ portfolios will be evaluated in one of these ways:
- Video Sample: Send a sample of work that represents your best effort and one that engages your audience. Either send a completed piece or edit together your best work into approximately a two-minute reel. You must be the principal creative force of the piece (writer, director, cinematographer, or editor). Then, upload it on Vimeo or YouTube and submit a link with a description of your role on the project.
- Writing Story: Write a complete short story, film script, or stage play telling an engaging story. Use proper formatting: double spaced, screenplay, or stage play where appropriate. Submit in PDF file format.
- Creative Essay: Create a written or video essay that expresses your point-of-view on specific aspects of filmmaking, such as directing, cinematography, sound design, or editing. Discuss the aspect(s) of filmmaking in which you are most interested, and why. If written, make sure it is in 12-point font, double-spaced, and in PDF format. If a video, upload it on Vimeo or YouTube and submit a link.
- Photo Story: Submit a portfolio of at least fifteen photographs that suggest a thematic or narrative coherence. A statement of 500 words or fewer that elucidates the narrative or the theme underlying these photographs should accompany this. Submit as a single PDF.
